North Mymms Footpath 11

North Mymms Footpath 11 starts at Hawkshead Road near Follys Arch, runs north west to Gobions Wood then follows the south edge of the wood to Bluebridge Road, thence on to the railway line. Where the public footpath crosses the first field boundary, a non public path splits off and runs along the west side of the boundary to Gobions Wood. This path is not a public right of way.

The land over which these paths run, is the property of The Royal Veterinary College and is used for the grazing of sheep and cattle. The college has not granted permission for the public to use the spur path to Gobions Wood so use of this path is trespass.

Because the fields are used for livestock, it is essential the boundaries are fenced, particularly to prevent animals straying off of college land and into the wood. In 2005 this was a significant problem and new fencing was erected along the boundary of the wood. Unfortunately, vandals cut the fence wire and sawed through a fence post and opened the gap into Gobions Wood where the spur path entered the wood and again animals were able to stray into the woods.

The gap in the fence was closed with two low rails late in June ready for a stile. On Monday 3rd July this was completed, giving easy access across the boundary. Unfortunately, between the evening of Wednesday 5th and late afternoon on Thursday 6th July, vandals broke one of the fence rails.

These and other incidents of vandalism in the area, combined with the persistent attacks on the boundary, may result in a more substantial fence being installed, thus permanently closing the entrance to Gobins to prevent animals straying.
